Anti-Noise Pop Guide

Can’t afford Noise Pop this year or can’t be bothered trying to score last-minute tickets? Although we here at the Hot List will be out in full force, bringing you up-to-the-minute Noise Pop coverage, we don’t want to forget about those of you who can’t make the weeklong SF music fest. Here are 7 Noise Pop alternatives happening in your area.

Jay Farrar at the Great American Music Hall
Catch this pioneer of alt-country and former member of both Son Volt and Tupelo Honey on Wednesday, February 27.

Lee Friedlander Exhibit at SFMOMA
Check out the legendary American shutterbug’s iconic photos of urban city scenes and images of suburban sprawl. Swing by the SFMOMA on Thursday night when it’s open until 8:45 p.m., then cruise over to Harlot and make a night out of it.

Death Angel at Slim’s
These local thrash metal veterans have shared the stage with Metallica and Megadeth and still know how to put on a great show. Don’t miss them when they play Slim’s on Thursday, February 28.

Slavic Soul Party Featuring the Extra Action Marching Band
Come get your freak on Eastern European-style at this soulful celebration of music and culture on Friday, February 29 at Café Du Nord.

Lemonade at the Hemlock Tavern
This SF-based three piece makes music that’s fun, danceable and, with a $5 door admission, much cheaper than your typical Noise Pop show.

The Passionistas at Thee Parkside
This SF garage outfit has been attracting attention from the local media and beyond. Watch them Saturday, March 1 and see what all the hype is about.

Arturo Sandoval’s Mambo Mania Big Band at Yoshi’s
With a mix of Cuban, rock and jazz this Grammy winner will provide a full spectrum of great entertainment when he performs all week long at Yoshi’s.
