July 01, 2008 Fundraiser for California Speaker Karen Bass at Yoshi’s Local politicos gathered at Yoshi’s on Monday, June 30, for a fundraiser organized by Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. and Hala Hijazi for California Speaker Karen Bass, the new Speaker of the California State Assembly—the first African-American woman in the nation to serve in that role. The shoulder-to-shoulder crowd huddled around the likes of Mayor Gavin Newsom and Supervisor Tom Ammiano—who’s also running for the State Assembly this year—while former Mayor Willie L. Brown, Jr. introduced Bass, whom he has mentored over the years. Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, whose Western Addition district includes Yoshi’s, stopped by later after a marathon BOS budget session just a few hours short of the new fiscal year.
