The Creative

As a graphic artist and independent clothing designer, Matthew Simmons loves his job.

It’s easy to spot Matthew Simmons—his trademark black-frame glasses, patterned button-up shirt and tailored vest and pants stand out among the seamstresses and bolts of colorful fabrics at Britex (146 Geary St., 415-392-2910). As a freelance graphic artist and independent clothing designer, this 47-year-old shop guy loves his downtown day job helping a creative clientele. After hours, don’t be surprised if you spot Simmons combing SF’s thrift stores for design inspiration or rocking out on stage at the local clubs as keyboardist for SF punkrock outfit Pepperspray.

“For my designs—mostly men’s tailored shirts—I go to two places. Britex, of course, is great for high-quality fabrics, especially wools and home-decorating tapestries. For all kinds of fun, patterned fabrics that are more inexpensive, I go to the Fabric Outlet in the Mission.” (2109 Mission St., 415-552-4525)

“I like to reuse things. I go to Ross Dress for Less on Market for belts. I get rid of an ugly women’s belt and use the big buckle for a men’s belt. I’m not a bargain hunter. I’m an artifact hunter.” (799 Market St., 415-957-9222)

“On a break from work, I go to Westfield SF Centre and sit under the dome. It’s a relaxing, comfortable spot.” (865 Market St., 415-512-6776)

“I get inspiration from thrift shops like the Goodwill on Mission and South Van Ness. I take vintage women’s dresses, cut the fabric and make shirts.” (1580 Mission St., 415- 575-2240)
