As we all well know, San Francisco is a fickle restaurant town, and as such, transformations are par for the course. The most recent among them is the morphing of Russian Hill neighborhood bistro Tablespoon into Bar Johnny, a hipper, dressed-down version of its former self (it’s a new concept from the same owners). For those ruing the reinvention, we offer a bit of good news: Tablespoon’s signature macaroni and cheese—the platonic ideal of cheddary, apple-wood-bacon-studded goodness—has made the leap to Bar Johnny. It’s not on the menu, but those in the know can still order the crumb-topped triumph or, as the waiter suggests, top a burger with it. Whoa.
