Since ravenous diners can’t get enough of a good thing, the only solution is to offer more. And that’s exactly what the chefs and owners of these local hot spots did. While it might’ve been hard to live up to the buzz, there is no sibling rivalry here. These seven spin-offs come with a fresh twist and manage to make a name for themselves.
B Star Bar This spot, from the same owners behind beloved Burma Superstar, is another Clement Street gem. Though there are a few dishes lifted off of Burma Superstar’s menu (notably the popular tea leaf salad), the menu has a broader pan-Asian appeal. 127 Clement St., 415-933-9900
Bar Tartine Luckily for fans of cult favorite Tartine Bakery, its beautiful sibling, Bar Tartine, takes reservations. The Cal-Med menu is best when things are kept fresh and simple. Note: The seats at the long marble bar are kept open for walk-ins. 561 Valencia St., 415-487-1600
Cav Wine Bar & Kitchen Former Hayes & Vine owner Pamela Busch has brought her philosophy of “drinking outside the box” to Upper Market. Just steps from Zuni Cafe, this urbane wine bar is decked out in crimson and steel and filled with wine enthusiasts sipping to their hearts’ content. 1666 Market St., 415-437-1770
Out The Door Riding high on the success of the Slanted Door, chef Charles Phan has opened two informal joints, both called Out the Door, serving casual Vietnamese food. The Out the Door menu reads like the Slanted Door’s greatest hits. 865 Market St., 415-541-9913
Piqueo's From the same team that brought Mochica to SoMa, Piqueo’s is doing its part to turn Bernal Heights into a dining destination. The contemporary Peruvian restaurant—with its rusty red walls, open kitchen and big windows overlooking Cortland Avenue—is ambitiously pushing the neighborhood’s culinary limits. 830 Cortland Ave., 415-282-8812 Pizzeria Delfina The little sister to the ever-booked Delfina next door, this is where you’ll find some of SF’s top Italian-style pizza. Yes, there’s a clam pie and a salsiccia (fennel sausage) one, but it goes without saying that a margherita sets the pizza standard, and this one does not fail: The sauce is tangy and topped with creamy, house-pulled mozzarella, and the crust is chewy, crisp and blistered. 3611 18th St., 415-437-6800
SPQR The team behind A16 has made the Italian restaurant into a household name among the food-loving cognoscenti, so it’s little surprise that its second venture—an approximation of a Roman trattoria squeezed into the former Chez Nous space on Fillmore—is packed every night. 1911 Fillmore Street, 415-771-7779
