A Loaf of One's Own

Who knew that that Mission District pub the Phoenix also sells Irish soda bread to go?

Loved by beer drinkers citywide for its Dublin-meets-the-Mission vibe and well-executed pub fare—fish-and-chips, pot roast, shepherd’s pie and the like—the Phoenix also serves another specialty of the Emerald Isle, Irish soda bread. Enjoy it there, alongside your brew, or pick up a loaf ($5) to bring home. The dense, nutty, bread, spread thick with (Irish) butter, is the ideal accompaniment to that classic St. Patrick’s Day feast of corned beef and cabbage. Toasted, it makes a fine morning-after breakfast.
