We queue up for Sukhi's potato samosas and green-chile-cheese tamales from All Star Tamales (Saturdays at the Alemany farmers market, Wednesdays at the Civic Center's Heart of the City market).

A slice of Arinell's cheese pizza (509 Valencia St., 415-255-1303) does the job like nothing else can.

$3 $3

A grilled bacon-wrapped hot dog with fried onions and jalapeños (look for the hot-dog vendor in the late-night hours around the Mission and 16th streets party corridor).

Chinese congee may be one of the most satisfying meals out there. We like the pork version at Jook Time (3398 Balboa St., 415-221-3818).

The ham-and-cheese turnover from Acme Bread Company (Ferry Building Marketplace, 415-288-2978) walks the line between breakfast and lunch.

The In-N-Out Double-Double (333 Jefferson St., 800-786-1000) is one of the things that make us glad we live in California.
