SCENE: A casual little red-sauce place that delivers on rustic Italian fare, Il Borgo is all the things we wish the average North Beach restaurant were. Housed on a nondescript Hayes Valley corner, the place is kitschy and comfy, with a hand-painted mural of an Italian village and tables decked out in old-school red-and-white-checked tablecloths.
EATS: All of the al dente pastas are made by hand and tossed in simple sauces, such as a chunky puttanesca chock-full of olives and briny anchovies. Charred thin-crust pizzas sport excellent sauce and unfussy toppings—the quattro stagioni (“four seasons”) version, heaped with prosciutto, olives, artichokes and mushrooms, is particularly irresistible.
