Form has never followed function so stylishly, as evidenced by four local designers who, not surprisingly, all got their start at one of two major incubators for design talent—Apple or IDEO. Take Branko Lukic, who applies a sense of magical lyricism to objects, going beyond what’s possible in order to imagine what might be great. Or Thomas Meyerhoffer, who turned an obsession with surfing into a craft, creating boards that embody that passion. Ammunition’s Robert Brunner has launched a line of appliances, while Jennifer Kilian, a creative director at Frog Design, is focused on incorporating sensory experiences back into household products. “The world has finally caught up to the far-reaching power of design,” says Kilian. “It’s fabulous to be alive while that’s happening.”
