If work’s keeping you from taking that week off in Napa, try a mid-week retreat to Bernal Heights, where life slows down to a delightful trot and you can cross the street without having to look both ways. Still, this tiny “town” is changing and growing. Italian restaurant Palatino closed and was replaced by restaurateur Jocelyn Bulow’s second Chez Maman. Red Hill Books has expanded its cozy one-room store—making space for author events and more magazines—and even that old dive Charlie’s Club got a facelift and a new name (Chaise Lounge).
