Once filled with bodegas and auto-repair shops, the MIssion has, in the last five years or so, bloomed with businesses drawn by relatively cheap rents and the neighborhood's perpetual hip factor. Anchored by 826 Valencia, a nonprofit established by local literary phenom Dave Eggers in 2002 to help children develop their writing skills, the Mission has become a mecca for painters, poets and playwrights—and the trendy restaurants and shops that inevitably follow. (Another factor: the redevelopment of the once-blighted Valencia Gardens housing project, which reopened in June.) Although a few early favorites like Alma and Den have disappeared in the past year—and Charles Phan has yet to open his long-promised casual eatery in the old Slanted Door space—many now-familiar names remain: Paxton Gate, Good Vibrations and Limón.
