One of the few parts of SF that can seem relentlessly urban, SoMa has an identity that’s hard to pin down. Anchored by world-class museums—SFMOMA, the new Museum of the African Diaspora and the underappreciated Cartoon Art Museum—the former industrial district is SF’s least walkable neighborhood yet perhaps its most dynamic.
Restaurants disappear and are reincarnated, streets are blighted and are then redeveloped and the city’s most ambitious plans unfold here: New Rincon Hill high-rises will change the skyline, the unveiling of the Westfield San Francisco Centre this fall will transform the Market Street corridor, and the coming Transbay Terminal will make our cars less necessary. It’s hard to keep up, but we’ll try.
