Sustainable Spaces CEO Matt Golden and his team of experts report to work looking less like gurus and more like “ghostbusters,” as he puts it. Armed with scientific tools used to evaluate how much energy a house emits, the crew puts together a plan to assist people with everything from cutting down on energy bills and emissions to reducing allergens and mold-causing moisture. Golden, who previously worked as an energy consultant, created the company in 2004 with childhood friend Adam Winter. “We want to help homeowners make smarter decisions that will better impact performance, in terms of systems, instead of looking to products for shiny, fancy solutions,” says the 33-year-old, who lives, with his wife, in a 750-square-foot floating house in Sausalito’s Liberty Dock. He’s an advocate for small, cost-effective tricks, such as insulating instead of spending $20,000 on solar panels. “It’s the little things that count,” he says. With global warming becoming harder to ignore, Golden hopes to take Sustainable Spaces’ holistic-rebuilding philosophy countrywide. Proof that the masses are ready for this information? A year ago, Golden was asked to perform a “green audit” of Ellen DeGeneres’ home while appearing on her daytime talk show.

Matt Golden recommends checking the Home Improvement section of the Energy Star website for complimentary resources for Sustainable Spaces’ holistic approach to household energy efficiency. Also head over to the Energy Federation Incorporated website to shop for essential low-tech solutions for a low-emissions home, like low-energy lightbulbs, low-flow showerheads and smart power strips.
