Walking into Nate Archer and Sunny Walker’s colorful Mission District shop, Painted Bird, is like walking into your hipster best friend’s closet that you’ve always envied. But unlike said friend, you can get all your scenester leather boots and ’60s summer dresses in one affordable shopping trip. Walker, an FIDM graduate, has a discerning eye for what’s cool now, and she’s pickier than the buyers at Buffalo Exchange or Wasteland. Though they also carry such local labels as Machine and Cristalette, which make designs out of vintage fabrics, don’t expect to find brand names here. “We definitely favor style over label,” says Archer.
